INTERNAL ATTORNEY INVESTIGATIONS
IEC conducts independent, objective, impartial internal investigations of claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and other workplace misconduct. The investigations comply with internal alternative dispute and complaint resolution procedures and state and federal law that delineate employer obligations to address workplace concerns.
Mr. Scholick provides expert services, both as a consultant and as an expert witnesses, in employment law related state and federal litigation. IEC has been retained by both plaintiffs and defendants to provide expert opinion and testimony on issues such as the adequacy of workplace investigations, harassment and discrimination policies and procedures.
EMPLOYMENT LAW TRAINING
IEC provides one-on-one and group training sessions for managers, supervisors and employees on harassment, discrimination and retaliation prevention. The training complies with new and evolving state mandatory training requirements and is designed both for people who have not received such training previously and for more experienced employees.

With Cynthia E Maxwell, Gary P. Scholick founded Independent Employment Counsel, LLP, in 1998. Since its founding, IEC and Mr. Scholick have focused on offering independent, objective, and impartial internal investigations of workplace misconduct claims; employment law training; and expert consulting services and witness testimony on matters relating to internal workplace investigations.
Mr. Scholick is a member of the State Bar of California, and admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, and various federal courts of appeal and district courts. He is also a member of the San Francisco Bar Association, the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law, the American Bar Association Equal Employment Opportunity Committee, the California State Bar Labor and Employment Section, and the Ethics Committee of the San Francisco Bar Association.
Mr. Scholick received his A.B. from Hunter College of the City University of New York, graduating cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law, graduating magna cum laude. Between 1987 and 2000, Mr. Scholick taught "Employment Law Litigation" at the University of San Francisco School of Law, as an adjunct Professor of Law.
Before he founded IEC, Mr. Scholick was a shareholder (i.e., partner) in one of the largest labor and employment law firms in the country, representing clients in almost all aspects of labor and employment law. He supervised and litigated scores of employment law cases, with a particular expertise in equal employment opportunity and wrongful discharge matters.
Mr. Scholick was also that law firm's General Counsel, representing the firm in various ethics, risk management, and general advice matters, including the representation of plaintiffs, oversight of outside counsel and compliance with court rules.
Since the late 1970s, Mr. Scholick has received Martindale-Hubbell's highest peer review ratings for professional excellence with regard to legal knowledge, communication skills, and ethical standards. Since 2012, Mr. Scholick has been selected by LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell as a Top Rated Lawyer in Labor and Employment.
His publications include Myriad Rules Dictate When, How Employers Must Investigate, April 8, 2005, San Francisco Daily Journal; Interview Guide for Supervisors (3rd Ed.); and contributing author to Issues of Workplace Privacy, 1993 and 1994 Employment Law Update, and Handling and Prevention of Fair Representation and Breach of Contract Cases, published by the Practicing Law Institute.
